Tucked away between Mossel Bay and George, Glentana is a picturesque seaside village that embodies the essence of the Garden Route’s natural beauty. This charming destination has a rich history, a thriving housing market, and plenty of attractions to captivate holidaymakers.
Glentana’s story began in the early 20th century, sparked by a dramatic maritime event. In 1902 a British steamer, the Baralong, was towing a massive floating dock destined for Durban when it encountered a fierce storm. The dock broke free and ran aground near Glentana, attracting the attention of Attie Murray, a lawyer from Oudtshoorn. Inspired by his visit to the area, Murray built a holiday home here and named it “Glentana”, reportedly after the Glen Tanar estate in Scotland. A certain whisky (that goes by the same name) is still brewed on this estate in Eastern Scotland. Over time the name Glentana stuck, and the village grew into a beloved holiday spot.
Glentana is primarily a holiday village, bustling with activity during school holidays and returning to peaceful tranquility for the rest of the year. The housing market caters to retirees and professionals who commute to nearby George, offering a mix of self-catering units, bed-and-breakfast accommodations, and guest houses. The area’s appeal lies in its serene environment, making it an attractive choice for those seeking a relaxed lifestyle or a second home.
For holidaymakers, one of the most fascinating attractions in Glentana is the Glentana Shipwreck. This historic site tells the story of the Baralong’s ill-fated voyage and offers a glimpse into the past. The wreck, visible in three large pieces, is a popular spot for adventurers and photographers. Visitors can explore the site via a scenic 5 km round-trip trail, which is free and accessible from the parking area at the popular Meet@Sea restaurant and Glentana Café.
